The Lifeline Next Door: Why Free Community Health Clinics Matter

Written by Marcie Mack, Ed.D., Executive Director of ERDA | June 27, 2025 5:04:57 PM Z

At the heart of every thriving community is a place where care is given without question; compassion is free of charge, and health isn’t a privilege—it’s a promise.

We’re fortunate to partner with incredible community organizations to bring a Remote Area Medical (RAM) free health clinic to Enid at the Stride Bank Center on July 12–13.

This clinic will offer comprehensive services at no cost, including:

  • Vision care: complete eye exams, eye health evaluations, and prescription glasses made on-site
  • Medical care: physical exams, prescription consultations, women’s health services, and general wellness exams
  • Dental care: cleanings, fillings, extractions, and X-rays

People often ask me why hosting this clinic matters—and why an economic development organization like ours would be involved. To me, the answer is simple: Community health is economic health.

When individuals are healthy, they’re more productive at work. Children miss fewer school days. Families avoid the weight of medical debt. A healthier community leads to greater economic stability, a stronger workforce, and a better quality of life for everyone.

For those who are uninsured or underinsured, even a routine doctor’s visit can feel financially out of reach. This clinic helps fill that gap—offering not just short-term care, but also connections to ongoing local healthcare resources. It does not replace existing services; rather, it enhances access and helps ensure more people are supported and seen.

To all the volunteers and partner organizations who have helped make this clinic possible—thank you. We could not do this without you.

Someone recently asked me how we’ll know if this effort is worth the time and energy. My answer is this: If we help even one person receive the medical, dental, or vision care they need, it’s a success.

As for my time—it’s always worth it when spent giving back to a community that has given so much to me and my family.

One of my favorite quotes captures it best:

“If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” — John F. Kennedy

Let’s be the “who.” Let’s make “now” count.
