Georgia Company Opens Enid Plant

Enid, OK - A Georgia company specializing in fireproofing, painting, coating, lining and powder coating has opened its fourth location in Enid.

Airco Inc. purchased and renovated the Hackney Ladish manufacturing plant located at 400 W. Willow. The business held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025.

“We’re excited to bring our expertise and dedication to the Enid community as we continue to grow and serve clients across the nation,” said Glenn Shugart, Airco director of business development. “We are looking forward to the new opportunities, new friendships and many years of learning, growing and coming together in the community of Enid, Oklahoma.”

Founded in 2005 by Dee Johnsen and Joe Wainscott, Airco has grown into one of the nation’s largest fireproofing and coatings applicators. It is a family-owned business certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise.

Headquartered in Newnan, Ga., Airco uses sustainable, low-VOC coatings to deliver durable finishes and provide turn-key solutions that help steel fabricators and general contractors with construction schedules while prioritizing safety and quality.

Post 9-11 regulations require multi-story buildings to use fireproofed steel. The fireproofing substance used by Airco is an epoxy and resin coating that expands to keep the steel cool so the building doesn’t immediately fall, the company stated in a news release. This cooled steel provides time to allow people to get out in the event of a fire.

“Airco’s decision to choose Enid is a direct reflection of our business-friendly community,” said Marcie Mack, Enid Regional Development Authority executive director. “They have received invaluable support and assistance from local businesses in revitalizing the location at 4th and Willow. Airco’s journey mirrors that of many local entrepreneurs — a family’s dream that has grown into a multi-state, nationally recognized company. We are grateful they have chosen our community, and we look forward to supporting their continued growth and success in Enid.”

GlennShugartMore than 50 Airco customers, vendors and community members attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting event at the plant. Shugart spoke about Airco’s dedication to the environment, safety and quality.

He also explained the company’s relationship with W&W AFCO Steel, located in Oklahoma City, as the reason the company chose to open a plant in Oklahoma and how Mack was pivotal in promoting the benefits of opening in Enid.

Enid City Manager Jerald Gilbert welcomed Airco to the community. The group was treated to a tour of the facility and barbecue.

Airco has expanded to a labor force of more than 400 with four locations. The others are in Newnan, Ga.; Claxton, Ga.; and Mount Vernon, Ohio.

Company officials said they will use paint and industrial coatings from the local Sherwin Williams, further solidifying their commitment to Enid.
